To the EAE Community.
Racism is a powerful expression of hate and bigotry. The recent killing of George Floyd — and before him, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and many other black and brown people — have prompted people across the country and around the world to stand this week in sorrow and anger against institutional racism and the devastating injustice it empowers. EAE stands with those people.
EAE is a community of educators and researchers dedicated to scholarship and creative expression that improves the world around us, and we are committed to values that respect people of all backgrounds and experiences.
As game scholars, we are committed to principles of justice, equity, and positive change. As educators, we must think deeply with our students and colleagues to seek ways that our creative practice can affect that change. We hold dear our responsibility to engage beyond the confines of campus to overcome ignorance, to advance principles of kindness and inclusivity, and to help build a world where people do not have to fear for their lives because of the color of their skin.
We speak here of EAE as a community. We could not be the community that we are without always seeking a better understanding of our own prejudices. Nor could we be that community without pursuing every means possible to step beyond those limitations to change our own intentions and choices for action. Our guiding thoughts are always to bring kindness, collaboration and diversity to our programs, research and extension. We join with the rest of the University of Utah to condemn these and all acts of racism, discrimination and intolerance.
Black lives matter.
